So What Could Possibly Happen To A Country When Its People Are Disarmed? Part 5 final in Series

Welcome to Venezuela, where former President (aka dictator) Hugo Chavez’s daughter is its richest citizen with an estimated $4.2 billion in assets. Amazing how that happens—one of the consequences of corruption of power in government.

That reminds me of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical “Evita” –the story about government corruption in Argentina in the 1950’s. The character/story narrator, “Che,” laments for his country as it succumbs to the corruption of its government. He cries out “What’s new Buenos Aires? Your nation, which a few years ago had the second largest gold reserves in the world, is bankrupt! A country which grew up and grew rich on beef is rationing it! La Prensa, one of the few newspapers which dares to oppose Peronism, has been silenced, and so have all other reasonable voices! I’ll tell you what’s new Buenos Aires!”

So what’s new Buenos Aires? What’s new Caracas, Venezuela? Nothing is new, just a repeat of history: a corrupt government resulting in the people paying the price in their standard of living, in their quality of life. Did you know Caracas is considered to be the world’s most violent city? Can you even fathom this?

The Venezuelan government’s answer to the overwhelming violence was to pass “The Law for the Control of Firearms, Ammunition and Disarmament” in 2013, claiming doing so would “guarantee” to save lives. It didn’t, apparently violence continued to increase.

Fascinating choice of solutions to such an onerous problem in “the most dangerous city in the world.” The government determines the best way to combat the criminal element is by disarming the citizenry (at the published expense of $47 million dollars), not by protecting the residents and getting rid of the bad guys, but by disarmament. As recently as August 2016, the government was continuing the program in a renewal of efforts to disarm Venezuelans, through a combination of seizures and a voluntary program to give up remaining firearms and ammunition.

Meanwhile, the corrupt government under the dictatorship of Hugo Chavez and now President Nicolas Maduro, is pillaging and raping the resources of the country and its people. This is resulting in, I am sure, more than just making Chavez’s daughter the wealthiest person in the country, while leaving its citizens desperate for the basic necessities of life.

An unarmed citizenry can neither protect themselves from the bad guys, nor can they protect themselves from an overstepping government through civil disobedience or revolution.
Its beginning to look like that was the plan all along.

Pray for the people of Venezuela. Pray for the United State of America. Let us learn from history. Let us learn from the mistakes of others. Let us protect our Second Amendment rights. Do not let them leave you disarmed and unprotected.

Jefferson is credited with saying “When the people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people there is liberty.” We need to remember that. There is nothing better than freedom.
