Why Jesus Was Born of a Virgin

Marlon Furtado

I was born a Furtado because my dad was a Furtado, and his dad was a Furtado, as was his dad, etc. I was born a sinner because my dad was a sinner, and his dad was a sinner, as was his dad, all the way back to Adam.

I might be a well-respected and law-abiding Furtado or I might be a corrupt Furtado, but I’ll still be a Furtado. I might be a well-respected and law-abiding sinner or I might be a corrupt sinner, but I’ll still be a sinner.

I hope that the above helps you to see that we are all sinners because we were born as sinners. You and I had absolutely no say in the matter. It’s all Adam’s fault. Now, that’s not to say we are innocent. There have been multiple times I’ve shaken my fist at God and done my own thing in rebellion against Him. Though I have inherited my sin nature from Adam, I’m just as guilty of resisting God and His authority over my life.

My dad passed on “Joseph’s Disease” to me. I had no say in the matter. His corrupted DNA was passed on to me, making walking very difficult. In the same way, Adam passed on “Sinner’s Disease” to me. I had no say in the matter. His corrupted DNA was passed on to each of us, so that we are at odds with God from our earliest days.

Perhaps another illustration will help us understand our situation. We live in a country with a representative government. In other words, the people in our state and federal legislatures make decisions that affect our lives. Sometimes we are in favor of their decisions and other times we disagree with them. In the same way, Adam, the first man, was mankind’s representative. His decision to disobey God set in motion the virus of sin that has affected and infected all of mankind.

Adam and Jesus were the only two men who came into being without the aid of a human father. 1 Corinthians 15:47 says, “The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second Man from heaven.” Two verses earlier, it says, “The first man Adam became a living being; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.” (1 Corinthians 15:45) Adam and Jesus are the only two representatives for mankind. Jesus is the last one and the only one who can change our standing with God.

This is why Jesus was born of a virgin. If there had been a human father involved, He would have inherited a sin nature like the rest of us. But, without a human father, Jesus did not have a sin nature. When faced with temptation, He didn’t play the God-card, but faced every temptation as an innocent man. Whereas Adam failed, Jesus passed with flying colors. “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15)

As the “last Adam”, Jesus is another REPRESENTATIVE. “For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.” (Romans 5:19) Adam’s constituency receives death. Jesus’ constituency receives eternal life and reconciliation with God. Who do you choose to represent you, Adam or Jesus? The choice is yours.
