Multnomah County Republican Party Calls Upon Oregon’s Governor To Prioritize Antibody Testing

James Buchal, Multnomah County Republican Chair

The Multnomah County Republican Party appreciates the sacrifice everyone in Oregon is making during this quarantine to reduce the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic.  However, there is growing concern that the quarantine is harming our economy.  We urge the State of Oregon to prioritize taking advantage of the new test for antibodies to the COVID-19, which is already coming into use in other parts of the country.

Oregon’s governor should use the first available test kits to perform a random sample test of Oregon’s population.  Random sampling can provide a statistically-meaningful estimate of Oregon’s population that has already acquired immunity to the virus.

We need to know if it is safe to lift the quarantine.  While scientists can advise us whether they believe enough of the population is immune so that it is safe to do so, Oregon also needs to make the results of the test available to the public so that Oregonians can participate in that decision.

Moving forward, Oregon should also prioritize making the antibody test available generally, allowing Oregonians who have acquired immunity to resume their normal lives as soon as possible.
