Your Greatest Asset

From our earliest interactions with other kids to our adult years, we find that there are three things that tend to impress others. People seem to be nicer to those who are smart, athletic, or rich. Think back to your school days. Was it not the smart kids whom the teachers seemed to favor? Was it not the athletes who received the cheers of the fans? And did not the wealthy seem to have lots of friends?

God doesn’t play favorites. He’s not impressed if a person is smart, athletic, or wealthy. Think about it. God created the entire universe. What is our intelligence compared to His brilliance? Or do you think He is wowed by a man lifting a few hundred pounds or running fast? God formed the scorching sun and stars, and He threw the planets into their orbits. And wealth? What’s a billionaire to Him? The Bible reveals that God owns the cattle on a thousand hills, meaning His resources are without limit.

If God is not impressed with our assets, then how do we garner His attention and favor? God answers that question in Jeremiah 9:23-24, when He says, “Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and KNOWS ME, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight.”

God informs us that the greatest asset is not our intelligence, athleticism, or wealth. Our greatest treasure is having a LOVE RELATIONSHIP with Him, knowing Him as Savior and Lord. God is not impressed by WHAT I CAN DO, but WHAT JESUS HAS DONE to make that relationship a possibility. The Lord Jesus Christ is the only one with whom God is impressed because His sacrifice on the Cross is the only means by which God can cleanse us of sin and remove those sins “as far as the east is from the west” (Psalm 103:12).

Jesus now offers the gift of eternal life to each of us. He does not exclude the person with the lowest IQ, the weakest body, or the poorest of the poor. As we grow older, our memory fades, our muscles atrophy, and our wealth diminishes. But a love relationship with God lasts forever. Nothing beats the peace we experience when we know our sins are forgiven and that we are right with God. If you’ve not yet asked Christ to dwell inside you and change you from the inside out, I hope you’ll do that soon.
