The Bible reveals in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” We are supposed to be different. What has changed? I still have the same job and family. I still sleep and eat. Sometimes we don’t feel like that much has changed. Chapter two in Ephesians is a wonderful passage that indicates what some of these changes are.

We WERE:

  • Dead in transgressions
  • Following the ways of the world
  • Gratified desires of the sinful nature
  • Object of wrath

We ARE:

  • Alive with Christ
  • Raised with Christ
  • Seated with Christ

Though it’s not in the Bible, an accurate description of the changes that take place in us are better understood when you observe a caterpillar form a cocoon, and later exit with wings that can carry it thousands of miles. In fact, evolution has no explanation for how caterpillars make their cocoon and pop out ready to fly with beautiful wings. Romans 8:2 further identifies the transformation that takes place when we receive Christ. It says, “Through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of Life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”

Sin is like gravity, ever pulling downward. If I tried to swim to England, the law of gravity (sin & death) would pull me down and I’d drown. But if I boarded an airplane, the law of flight (Spirit of Life) supercedes that of gravity. Christians are NOT BETTER people than non-Christians. The vast differences between the Christian and those who haven’t yet surrendered to Christ is the presence of the Holy Spirit. He takes up residence inside every Christ-follower and transforms us from the inside out.

It is the Spirit of God who makes all the difference in us. Galatians 5:22-23 lists some of the changes in us: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Our transformation is most evident when we let His fruit shine through our lives.
