Lift Up Your Heads

There’s a lot of reasons in our world today to be overcome with discouragement. It seems there is unrest around every corner. News is filled with murder, rape, abuse, burglary, and tragedy. Entertainment has become politicized. People on social media often act like spoiled brats instead of listening to one another like mature adults. Health insurance and rent have skyrocketed, creating financial anxiety for many families.

But, followers of Jesus are to lift their heads high above these things. When Jesus warned us that life would be filled with evil, He had no intention that His people should become down-in-the-mouth. We have every reason to be joyful regardless of this world’s social climate. After all, we are reminded that this world is only a snap of the fingers on God’s eternal clock. We will live forever and ever in heaven, where sin will not be allowed entrance. That should outweigh all the bad stuff in this life, right?

But, if you are like me, sometimes heaven seems a long way off. The length of our lives may be a snap, our lives may be likened to vanishing vapors, but it seems like a long time to endure the pressures of life on this planet. I know I shouldn’t feel this way, but sometimes I do. When I begin to lose my joy, Psalm 24:7-10 often perks me up.

Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.

Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.

Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.

Who is He, this King of glory? The LORD Almighty—He is the King of glory.

I know this portion is speaking prophetically of the future time Jesus will return to our planet and enter the city of Jerusalem. But I like to picture a parent gently lifting the head of their sad and disheartened child. They lift their chin to make eye contact and communicate their love. They want their child to know that things will be okay. I picture my heavenly Father lifting my chin, as well. As He does so, He renews my hope and confidence as He reminds me once again that He loves me and can handle my situation. This is what He does for you, too. I love these descriptions of the One who reinvigorates our hearts. He is the King of Glory, the highest authority in all His glorious creation. He is strong and mighty. Nothing can stand against Him. There is no battle that He can’t win. Whatever your troubles, cast them on the Lord. He is strong and able to carry your burdens.
