Learning To See And Hear

Have you ever felt like people don’t really listen to what you are saying? You are not alone! Listening isn’t easy; it’s a decision and an action. God hears every whisper with the heart of a father.

“I am praying to you because I know you will answer, Oh God. Bend down and listen as I pray” (Psalm 17:6 NLT).

A few winters ago a barrage of hailstones pounded my office window. I looked outside instantly mesmerized as God surrounded me with His presence. I witnessed tiny chunks of ice erupt in slow motion morphing into fiery iridescence droplets as they hurled through the air. Then… the light faded, and hailstones turned into rain.

Those moments took my breath away. I archived in memory what I saw so I would never forget. I watched God direct a symphony in nature as I mentally filmed those moments. My senses heightened, watching the glory and wonder of God in a hailstorm.

As a young woman I loved hiking alone in the forest. I always felt a sense of clarity hiking on Big Bear Mountain, in California, where I encountered God in a different way.I found a fast-paced stream deep in the forest. A rock at the edge of the stream provided a place to rest and watch pristine water surge toward an unknown destination. It felt like I was seeing and hearing for the first time. I saw energy, momentum, and determination increase with purpose. I realized that unlike this mighty stream I didn’t have a purpose. If a stream had a purpose and destination, then why didn’t I?

Watching the hailstorm triggered that ancient memory archived forty years earlier. I revisited the overwhelming joy and peace I found in the forest during the hailstorm. Both experiences old and new, are a glimpse of God’s majesty and glory. God guides us into soul-balance. Watching ornaments of winter and spring transform are an awesome way to sense His presence. He reminded me that He is my protector, from everlasting to everlasting (Psalm 90). My journey was to learn how to listen in order to hear!

“Then the eyes of those who see will not be blinded, And the ears of those who hear will listen” (Isaiah 32:3 NASB).

Like in nature we also transform. The moment we fall in love with Jesus, everything changes. Our eyes open to see a greater vision. Our ears unlock as precepts sharpen with clarity, and our soul senses the quiet as God surrounds us with His love.

Challenging life-storms will always rage. If you come humbly before God, without the mental-noise, the Holy Spirit will comfort you through faith.

Learning to listen sharpens the mind, heals the soul, and trains us for battle readiness. You are “The Apple of His Eye.” Are you ready to be quiet… and just listen?

This article was beautifully written Pam and your use of descriptive words were painting a picture. Although have eyesight, I do not have the ability to have what I call “mind sight”. Words are incredibly important to me. The create emotion and that is how I “see”. Thank you for this lovely thought provoking article. Look forward to reading more.
