Corbett Fire District Says “Thanks”

Since the beginning of the Eagle Creek Fire, on September 5, 2017 the Corbett Fire District has been very fortunate. The Corbett Fire District, which protects the western portion of the Scenic Columbia River Gorge lost no structures in the area that is within the fire district, firefighters suffered no major injuries in the week long fire, and even today the Corbett Fire District is still receiving donations from groups wanting to help.
The Corbett Fire District has received cash donations of approximately $11,000. On November 6, 2017 the West Columbia Gorge Chamber of Commerce presented a check to the department for $2,600, additionally Serve Pro presented a check of $2,000. The Corbett Grange put on a dance and donated the proceeds to Corbett Fire District. During the fire citizens stopped by the station to donate money and one check arrived all the way from Buffalo, New York for the amount of $200.00.
Other organizations demonstrated their support by treating the firefighters. The Corbett Country Market put on a steak dinner at the Corbett Fire Hall, the Riverview Restaurant invited the firefighters and friends to a very nice benefit dinner, as well as the CAPS (Springdale School) invited the firefighters to a Mexican-themed dinner at the school.
During the fire numerous people arrived at the station to prepare meals with donated food. Rodney Duncan, the cook at the Corbett School District, prepared gourmet meals that served 250 first responders sit down dinners several times during the week of the fire. Subway donated thousands of sandwiches that were delivered to firefighters in the field.
Donated items included such things as eye drops (critical for eye comfort), baby wipes, paper towels, sports drinks, etc. In one case a semi-truck arrived with eight pallets of sport drinks. Additionally, a man drove from Scappoose, Oregon to donate a car full of needed supplies that he had just purchased. With an abundance of items and a lack of room for storage some items were donated to the Corbett School District.
In this season of Thanksgiving, the Corbett Fire District is grateful for this needed support. Chief Dave Flood indicates that the cash donations will be used to purchase lightweight wildland firefighting hose and advanced emergency medical equipment to better serve the Corbett Fire District and its visitors.
