September Fun Facts & Trivia

In September we celebrate some serious holidays, such as Labor Day (September 2nd), and U.S. Constitution Day on the 17th. But, we also take time out of our busy, hectic schedules to have some fun while we celebrate National Teddy Bear Day (the 9th), and Fortune Cookie Day (the 13th), along with month-long tributes to Classical Music, Square Dancing, and Little League Baseball.

• Emma Mills Nutt (1860–1915) became the world’s first female telephone operator on the First of September 1878 when she started working for the Edwin Holmes Telephone Dispatch Company (Boston Telephone Dispatch Company) in Boston, Massachusetts.
• At 4:45 a.m. on September 1, 1939, 1.5 million German troops invaded Poland all along its 1,750-mile border. Simultaneously, the German Luftwaffe bombed Polish airfields, and German warships and U-boats attacked Polish naval forces in the Baltic Sea. On September 3, Britain and France declared war on Germany, initiating World War II
• On September 1, 1985, Seventy-three years after it sank to the North Atlantic, a joint U.S.-French expedition located the wreck of the RMS Titanic. The sunken liner was about 400 miles east of Newfoundland in the North Atlantic, lying on the ocean floor at a depth of about 13,000 feet.
• September 2, 1945: the Japanese government officially surrendered to the Allies.
• Actor Alan Ladd’s birthday was September 3, 1913.

• September 4, 1918 was the birthdate of Paul Harvey, radio personality, famous for the quote: “And now, you know the rest of the story.”
• Jesse James, outlaw, bank and train robber was born on September 5, 1947.
• On September 5, 1936, Sam Houston was elected President of the Republic of Texas. Houston helped Texas win admission to the United States in 1845 and was elected as one of the state’s first two senators.
• September 6, 1901: President William McKinley was shot by a 28-year-old anarchist named Leon Czolgosz. On September 14, McKinley died from gangrene that had gone undetected in the internal wound.
• Arnold Palmer, champion golfer, was born on September 10, 1929.
• September 10, 1934: birthdate of Roger Maris, baseball player, known as a homerun slugger.
• William Howard Taft, 27th U.S. President and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, was born on September 15, 1957.
• Renowned mystery writer Agatha Christie was born on September 15, 1890.
• September 21, 1947: birthday of Stephen King, novelist.
• Multi-talented actor, Mickey Rooney, was born on September 23, 1920.
• George Gershwin, famous American composer, was born on September 26, 1898.
